Listen to Amanda Sue Winterhalter

In November of last year, The Bushwick Book Club of Seattle performed songs inspired by "The Carter Family: Don't Forget This Song." It was a wonderful one time event. The highlight, for me, was Amanda Sue Winterhalter's "Sugar Water." The song describes the travails of Sara Carter, with references to the tree that A.P. planted, and was sung in an acapella  mountain style reminsicent of Sara Carter's. The performance and the song gave me chills!

Now you can hear the song too. It's the final track on Amanda Sue's debut album, OLEA, and you can hear it (and order it if you like it) on the bandcamp website. See if "Sugar Water" doesn't give you chills as well!

Big Planet signing last summer

Thank you to Mike Rhode for documenting my signing at Big Planet Comics in Bethesda, MD on his Comics DC blog...
http://comicsdc.blogspot.com/2014/06/dave-lasky-at-big-planet-comics.html

He took some great photos, including one of Martha Burns and me. I was thrilled that she was willing to play a set of Carter Family tunes...

Belatedly, I want to thank everyone who came out to see me (in the horrible DC-area traffic), including classmates from elementary school to college, and my Aunt Bev and Uncle Mark!  Thanks to Greg Bennet for hosting at his lovely Big Planet Comics Bethesda store!

(Trivia: The store is located just a few blocks from where the Red Fox Inn, a historic bluegrass venue, was once located.  Martha and I stopped to look at the spot afterwards, now called Positano Ristorante Italiano. I took a moment to remember autoharp master Ron Penix, who had played at the Red Fox, and who had recently passed away.)

Some Pictures From Our Recent Book Event at the Ballard Public Library

On May 20th of this year, we did a pleasant presentation and book-signing event for the Carter Family book at the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library. Hannah Parker of the SPL sent us a couple of photographs from the event. First, here's us smiling at the book-signing table:

And here are the wonderful Laurel Bliss and Cliff Perry, who serenaded the audience with gorgeous renditions of Carter Family songs. I wish they'd had an extra hour to sing and play! It was a most pleasant, all too brief evening. Thanks to everyone who attended!
